Certificate in Tourism and Hospitality Management

The aim of the programme is to provide students with a broad spectrum of the industry-tourist attractions, wholesales tour operators, retail travel, tourist information, services and meeting, hotels, club and resorts through a combination of classroom learning and on-the-job training (OJT).

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Make use of the basic features and functions of the English language when used in communication, so as to provide quality service
  • Explain the concept of tourism and the business operations pertaining to the tourism industry.
  • Elaborate on the fundamental and eminent safety and health movement
  • Identify the different types of marketing, and the process to improve marketing strategies
  • Improve communication skills via listening, observing, building relationships and having a good presentation
  • Identify the challenges of customer service and improve customer service

Module Synopsis

Developing Tourism/Hospitality Industry Knowledge

This course is designed to provide the student with a general overview of the Tourism and Hospitality Industry covering business operations and knowledge ranging from lodging, cursing, restaurant, services, beverages, clubs, theme parks, gaming and special events

Following Health, Safety and Security Procedures

The job of the modern safety and health professional is more challenging and more important than it has ever been, and it provides an up-to-date, practical teaching resource that focuses on the basic safety-related needs of people in the workplace.

Promoting Products and Services to Customers

This course is designed to enable students to understand the dynamics of personal selling in       promoting products and services to customers.  This course provides the students the knowledge to deliver that unique selling points through developing customer relationship,       observing the communication style, providing products/services with solutions, understanding the buying process and buyer behavior.  The course also discusses on handling buyer concerns and managing the sale forces

Communicating on the Phone and Performing Clerical Duties

The course is designed to enable students to become more competent communicators. This   will provide students with grounding in skills essential to human communication including: public presentation, small group communication, and interpersonal communication

Managing Quality Customer Service

This module aims to primarily create a “mindset for service” among students or learners and to equip them with the necessary customer service skills and knowledge in providing excellent service for future employment in service related industries.

English

Introduction to the concepts and principles of professional business communication and supports the development of basic skills in interpersonal, spoken, written and electronically transmitted business communications. It also provides a comprehensive, systematic coverage of modern business English, suitable for the widest possible use within the hotel and tourism industries; and develop the students’ English language skills through reading, listening, dialogue and written work

Industrial Attachment

Coleman College recognizes an important aspect in education is about gaining professional skills in a relevant workplace. As such, several of our certificate and diploma courses provide opportunities for students to gain valuable workplace skills from our arrangement for industrial attachments at relevant workplaces where students are placed in organizations within the tourism and hospitality and related establishments for a period of 6 months after completion of their institutional studies. Students are expected to have successfully completed all modules (institutional) before they proceed to the 6-month Industrial Attachment. For this course, the industrial attachment is compulsory and has to be completed successfully before they are awarded the Certificate. In cases where the students are unable to obtain the Training Work Pass from the Ministry of Manpower for the Industrial Attachment, they are required to complete a project work (project paper) to be awarded the Certificate.

Scope of Study

Principles, theories and cases studies related to hospitality business

Delivery Mode

The module will consist of lectures, case studies, role play, class exercises, game, tutorials and other appropriate learning methodologies to equip and develop student’s learning.

Teacher Qualifications

All teachers are registered with the Committee for Private Education (CPE). All teachers have the required qualifications. Please refer to Our Teachers list in the website for more details.

Average Teacher-Student Ratio is 1:40 for Tutorials, 1:64 for Lectures

Please note that the maximum number of students in the classroom is subjected to the maximum allowable seating capacity

Progression Pathway

Students who pass the certificate level can apply to progress to a Diploma course offered by Coleman College as follows:

  • Diploma in International Hospitality Management awarded by Coleman College

  Full time: (6 months of Institutional study and 6 months of Industrial   Attachment).

  • Diploma in International Tourism Management awarded by Coleman College.

  Full Time: (7 months of Institutional study and 6 months of Industrial Attachment)

Age: At least 16 years old
Academic: At least 1 subject pass with Grade 5 and above at GCE N (A) level or 1 subject passes with Grade D and above at GCE N(T) level or equivalent
English Proficiency: At least a pass in English with Grade 5 and above at GCE N(A) level and Grade D and above in English at GCE N(T) level or equivalent
