Certificate in English as a Foreign Language (Advanced 1 and Advanced 2)

Coleman College offers Certificate in English as a Foreign Language courses in different levels for international students who wish to acquire a good foundation in this international language. They are categorized into Elementary and Pre-Intermediate, Pre-Intermediate and Intermediate, Intermediate and Higher Intermediate, Higher Intermediate and Advanced 1, Advanced 1 and Advanced 2..

The Certificate in English as a Foreign Language course will equip students with a good foundation in the English language which will enable them to build and enhance their reading, writing, listening and speaking ability in English.

At each level, students will be able to grasp the intended key outcomes. From learning grammar and commonly used words to cultivating basic communication skills, to building simple structures while developing sufficient vocabulary base through discussions and writings. After completion, students will be able to produce reasonable explanations and arguments on abstract thought and topics.

At the end of this level, learners should be able to:

  • Understand with ease virtually everything heard or read.
  • Summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation.
  • Express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of proficient meaning even in more complex situations.

Course Outline

The programme consists of an English Teaching Module

Synopsis – Advanced 1 and Advanced 2 Level

At this level students strive for proficiency in all the skill areas required at the university or college level. Students write progressively longer academic essays based on original research. Students learn to participate in seminars and further refine their skills in public speaking.

Coleman College reserves the right to cancel a class/an intake if the minimum number of students enrolled is less than 10 for any programme per class. Students may enroll into a later intake, if any, or withdraw from course. (For refund, please refer to our Refund Policy)

The course durations for Advanced 1 and Advanced 2 – 6 months, Full-time

Maximum allowable period to complete the course level is 12 months

Assessments may consist of:
End term level tests, unit or progressive tests, quizzes, speeches, interviews and homework.

*Students (both International and local) must achieve an attendance rate of 80% and above in order to qualify for examinations.

Assessment Grading Criteria

Student will be graded either ‘Pass’ or ‘Fail’.  Students must achieve at least 60 marks in order to ‘Pass’.

Teacher Qualifications

The Council for Private Education (CPE) is duly notified of all the teachers in Coleman College. All teachers have the required qualifications. Please refer to Our Teachers list in the website for more details.

Maximum Teacher-Student Ratio is 1:40

Please note that the maximum number of students in the classroom is subjected to the maximum allowable seating capacity.

Progression Pathways

The result of passing this course should be fluency at a university graduate level. Candidates may pursue higher education, in their chosen field of interest, subject to the entry requirements set by the institution/university.

Other candidates may opt to look for employment in their chosen field of specialization.

Age: At least 7 years old
Academic: At least Primary 1 education for applicant between ages 7- 17.  For applicant 18 years and above, at least completed Grade 7 or Secondary 1 or equivalent
English Proficiency: At least Primary 1 proficiency in English and student will be emplaced based on placement test
