Overview

Coleman College offers Certificate in English in different levels for international learners who wish to acquire a good foundation in this international language.

The Certificate in English (Elementary Plus) course will equip learners with a good foundation in the English language which will enable them to build and enhance their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.  The modules in this course are Elementary and Pre-intermediate.

Learners will be able to grasp the intended key outcomes of each module. They will pick up grammar and commonly used words which help them in their communication skills. Through writing practices and discussions, learners will be able to communicate with appropriate grammatical structures while developing sufficient vocabulary base.

Objective

At the end of this course, learners should achieve an IELTS equivalent banding of 4.5 and be able to :

  • Understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
  • Deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken.
  • Produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.
  • Describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Module Synopsis


1. Elementary

Module Summary

This module covers the foundation level. Learners will receive listening, speaking, grammar and writing practices. Learners will be able to use many regular and irregular verbs, hold basic conversations on familiar topics and write short written messages.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the Elementary module, the learners should reach the A2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for. Learners will be able to:

  • Understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment).
  • Communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.
  • Describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate basic need.


2. Pre-intermediate

Module Summary

This module prepares learners for intermediate level. Learners will receive listening, speaking, grammar and writing practice. Learners should be able to hold fluent conversations on familiar topics and use basic English with few or no errors.  They will understand how to write letters and essays using paragraph structures and a variety of grammar and vocabulary.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the Pre-intermediate module, the learners should reach the A2 and some elements of B1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Learners will be able to:

  • Understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
  • Deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken.
  • Produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.
  • Describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
  • Acquire competency skillsets to achieve a banding of IELTS 4.0.

Teacher Qualifications

The Committee for Private Education (CPE) is duly notified of all the teachers in Coleman College. All teachers have the required qualifications. Please refer to “Our Teachers List” in the website for more details.

Maximum Teacher-Student Ratio is 1:40

Please note that the maximum number of students in the classroom is subjected to the maximum allowable seating capacity.

Progression Pathway

Graduates of this course will qualify for advancement to the next level.

Entry Requirements

Age: At least 12 years old
English Proficiency: TOEFL Paper score of 343 or TOEFL IBT score of 18 or IELTS score of 1.5 or equivalent (subject to internal placement test).
