Overview

This course aims to help students:

• understand and use familiar everyday expressions and basic phrases satisfying practical needs in connection with education, training and social roles.

• write short simple phrases and sentences in documents such as forms, lists and messages.

• interact in a simple way, read and understand short texts on familiar topics and write short simple phrases and sentences.

• understand short texts on familiar topics and obtain information from common signs and symbols.

Objective

This short course aims to help students communicate effectively and confidently in English by developing the students’ reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.

Course Structure

Course Outline

The course consists of a English teaching module comprising:

Reading
There will be reading exercises and English speaking sessions. The reading exercises cover a wide range of genres and include non-text materials as well. Students will have the opportunity to read and interpret diverse texts which could stimulate them to carry out further research.

Listening
Students will be exposed to videos and audios at natural speed in order to get accustomed to phonological changes, rhythms, and the pitch and intonation of natural spoken English.

Speaking
This is aimed at stimulating students’ creativity. Students are also given opportunities to make impromptu speeches that will help build confidence in speaking.

Writing
Students will be encouraged and prompted to write short stories in pairs or groups.

Scope of Study

Listening, speaking, reading, grammar and writing in English.
