Overview

Be equipped with the appropriate skills to gain and excel in decision-making positions in business and other organizations.

Retail Management considers the traditional framework of retailing and looks at the complexity of the competitive environment, as well as technology that can be used in retailing. Retail Management includes the importance of building and maintaining relations, store and non-store activities, and a view of emerging technologies. It also looks at organization structure and human resource management as well as the pricing. Overall, the course deals with retail business and operation management, digital retail and visual marketing, electronic commerce, workplace safety and health practice, business statistics and decision making, purchasing management and industrial attachment or project.

Furthermore, students would be able to put their theoretical knowledge into practice through a 6 months Industrial Attachment or project.

Upon successful completion, students will be awarded the Diploma in Retail Management by Coleman College. This qualification widens the job opportunities in careers ranging from retail manager, store manager, sales and merchandiser, department manager and more.

Objective

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understand the fundamental importance of retailing as a customer-focused activity and as an important service sector within the environment and society at large

  • Apply core retail marketing principles in the delivery of customer values

  • Understand the nature of specific retailing activities and how they are integrated within a distribution channel and the wider exchange process

Module Synopsis

  1. Business Communication

This module is designed for students to learn an effective business communication which is necessary to direct the day to day activities of the organization. It makes it possible to get immediate feedback and to avoid any misunderstandings that may arise.

  1. Basics of Statistics

This module is designed for students to learn various statistical techniques and their applications that will assist them in making simple business decisions.

  1. Critical Thinking Skills

This module is designed for students to learn how to apply the critical thinking process to problem-solving and decision making and enhance their personal effectiveness and work performance.

  1. Academic Writing

This module is designed for students to build their proficiency and confidence as a writer of English, reading, critical reasoning, and research skills.

  1. Retail Business & Operation Management

This module is designed for students to understand retailing from a business, management and operation perspective.

  1. Retailing in the Digital Age

This module is designed for students to understand today’s digital world and about putting customers first with technology that engages at a personal level.

  1. Retail Sales and Buying Analytics

This module is designed for students to understand retail analytics on how to use Data to Win More Sales, Tracking Orders and Customers.

  1. Workplace Safety and Health Practice

This module is designed for students to appreciate health, safety and welfare legislation and policies are put into practice and monitor the effectiveness on health and safety in the built environment. Students will draft risk assessments to counter health and safety issues in the retail management.

  1. Industrial Attachment/Project

Industrial attachment is part of the curriculum and it is seen as an integral part, where the students need to use their initiative to translate theories learnt in classrooms and perform assignments in an actual working environment. It instils in the students the right kind of work attitudes and professionalism through interaction with people in the organizations, and observation of their future roles in industry and reduce the on-the-job training requirements so that they can become effective and productive to their respective organizations much sooner than is usual for fresh graduates.

Students are expected to have successfully completed all modules (institutional) before they proceed to the 6-month Industrial Attachment. For this course, the industrial attachment is compulsory and has to be completed successfully before they are awarded the Diploma. In cases where the students are unable to obtain the Training Work Pass from the Ministry of Manpower for the Industrial Attachment, they are required to complete a project work (project paper) to be awarded the Diploma.

Retail Market is the most attractive and emerging market in the world and has demanded a greater number of trained professionals in this field. Coleman college strives to create a new generation of smart retail professionals of international calibre and aims to equip our students with the best practices being followed across the globe.

Delivery Mode

The modules consist of lectures, case studies, project assignments, class exercises, tutorials, examination and other appropriate learning methodologies to equip and develop student’s learning.

Course Duration

Full-time 6 Months (Institutional Studies) + 6 months (Industrial Attachment)

Maximum allowed period for the student to complete the course is 24 months.

Teacher Qualifications

The Committee for Private Education (CPE) is duly notified of all the teachers by Coleman College. All teachers have the required qualifications and/or experience. Please refer to Our Teachers list in the website for more details.

Average Teacher-Student Ratio is 1:40 for Tutorials, 1:64 for Lectures.

Please note that the maximum number of students in the classroom is subjected to the allowable seating capacity.

Progression Pathway

Graduates who wish to further their studies in this field may apply for a relevant programme/course offered by other institutions or universities. Admission is subjected to institutions or universities entry requirement at the point of application.

Entry Requirements

Age:

Minimum 17 years of age and above

Academic Level:

GCE ‘O’ level with 3 subjects passes. English plus any other 2 subjects or; Higher NITEC or equivalent foreign qualification.

OR

Matured students:

At least 30 years old with at least 8 years of working experience will be considered on an individual basis.

Language Proficiency:

IELTS 5.5 or equivalent
