Higher Diploma in Quantity Surveying
Quantity Surveying is primarily centred on the construction business for the management of the costs and budgets of large projects. From the moment, a plan is drawn until a large construction project has been completed, a quantity surveyor is likely to be involved in a legal, technical and financial capacity. The functions of a quantity surveyor are broadly concerned with the control of the cost on construction projects, the management and maintenance of the budget, valuations and any legal matters arising through the course of the project. They are required to make sure that the project remains profitable and efficient.
The job requires a combination of technical, financial and legal knowledge. With a qualification in quantity surveying career possibilities include contracting or private quantity surveying, building surveying, construction management or consultancy, accountancy and financial services management or estate management. As a student, you can be a student-member of the professional body such as The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), this organisation plays a leading role in the training and development for the built environment sector.
Quantity surveyors operate in all sectors of the built environment, and are primarily concerned with the value and financial management of construction projects and the subsequent building life cycle. They have specialist skills and knowledge relating to cost and contract management which require an expert understanding of construction techniques, procurement options and legal matters and the sustainable use of resources.
Quantity surveyors provide clients with detailed information on which to base decisions and are valued for their creative ideas and solutions at the early stages of a construction project. They add value by monitoring the functions of cost, time and quality in projects of any scale. The Quantity surveyor’s role is vital to the success of the construction project and requires excellent business sense and a good understanding of management and construction processes. They assess the value of work to be done and manage and monitor costs as the project progresses.

Construction & Civil Engineering Technology 1
This module requires learners to develop an understanding of the methods and techniques applied in civil engineering structures and the skills needed to solve complex problems associated with civil engineering activities.
This module introduces learners to the methods and techniques used to create civil engineering structures. This module has a strong theoretical underpinning knowledge that learners will develop an appreciation to the technical requirements for substructures and superstructures. Learners will be able to identify the hazards related to build environment and civil engineering activities. Upon understanding the importance of health, safety and welfare legislation, learners will prepare design solutions and produce safety plans for civil engineering works.
This module provides learners with an opportunity to develop skills in using analytical methods and statistics to solve construction and engineering problems.
This module provides learners with an understanding of analytical techniques and the mathematical skills needed to solve construction and engineering problems. This module has been designed to enable learners to use mathematical processes to solve construction, civil engineering and building services engineering problems. It is also intended to provide a basis for further study of the analytical methods and engineering mathematics needed for learners working in civil engineering and building services engineering disciplines.
Cost Estimation and Economics
This module provides learners with an opportunity to understand how wider market forces, government policies and economic activity influence costing for the construction and built environment sector.
This module provides learners with an understanding of how the economic environment affects the construction and built environment sector. This module has been designed to enable learners to discuss, review and explain the implications of economic theories on the construction and built environment sector. Learners will also gain an understanding of government economic activity and its implications for the construction and built environment sector.
This module provides learners with an understanding of how the guiding principles to cost estimation are related time, risk, rewards. Students will learn the appropriate controls, implementation, budgeting required for the expected outcomes. Learners will understand that Cost estimating provides the framework for cost control through the lifecycle of any initiative. Cost control is making sure the project stays within the budget set during the cost estimating and cost planning processes. The learner will apply the guiding principles comes in many forms and permutations on cost estimating and cost planning, and the need to control this scarce resource.
Workplace Safety and Health Practice
This module enable learners to appreciate health, safety and welfare legislation and policies are put into practice and monitor the effectiveness on health and safety in the built environment. Learners will draft risk assessments to counter health and safety issues in the built environment.
On completion of this module, learners will understand current health, safety and welfare legislation applicable to the construction and built environment sector. Learners will understand the main requirements of an effective health and safety policy and its successful implementation in the workplace.
Learners will be able to identify the hazards around the work place and assess the potential risk involved and implement the most appropriate control measures to prevent or mitigate ill health and injuries on site.

Green Engineering Design and Application
This module provides learners with knowledge on engineering design and application for low energy building management system, use of clean and reusable energy, applications on motor driven mechanism such as electric vehicles and other transportations.
Green engineering is value added engineering that considers low energy consumption, recycling and reuse of materials resource, processes and sustainability to reduce pollution. Different types of energy resources, their optimal use and innovative substitutes be considered. The design and application of green engineering will be studied for areas of building management, motor driven machineries and industrial applications. The module gives an understanding on environmentally friendly and efficient mobility and how to provide solutions in future requirements. Student will also learn about uses of environmentally friendly, easily biodegradable fuels and sustainably generated, pollutant tested materials. The module will deal with creative ways to handle future energy needs.
Professions in Context
This module provides learners with a prospect to develop the skills needed to devise and implement a project scope, scheme of work, critically analyse and present the project.
This module will develop learners’ skills in terms of identifying a realistic problem and able to propose a solution and as the ability to work collectively as a team. This module also facilitates the application of knowledge, understanding and skills developed in other modules to be applied to this project.
This module is designed to bring the learners together into teams so that they can coordinate their individual skills and abilities. The scheme of work should give individual learners an opportunity to take responsibility for their contribution to the outcome and exhibit their ability to work as a team.
Learners will also develop skills to carry out evaluations of their group project and be able to present solutions.
Construction & Civil Engineering Technology 2
This aim of this module is to teach the methods and techniques used for civil engineering projects and cultivate skills in solving problems arising from construction and civil engineering activities.
This module provides learners with an understanding of standard methods and techniques used in complex civil engineering activities. There will be a strong emphasis on the theories that reinforces the knowledge in this module. There will also be emphasis on learners in selecting and applying the appropriate methods and resources through a variety of realistic case studies. Discussion on new technologies that is available and practiced in different parts of the world in the Built Environment will be addressed
Contracts and Procurement
This module provides learners with the opportunity to gain knowledge of the roles, responsibilities and activities of the parties and organizations involved in contractual procedures and the procurement of building projects.
This module develops knowledge of the nature and purpose of the legal requirements and procurement arrangements are used in the construction and built environment sector.
Learners will gain knowledge of the parties and organizations involved in construction projects and how current issues and best practice are applied to the procurement of contracts. The varying available procurement arrangements will be considered throughout the design and construction cycle, from inception to completion of the contract. Learners will gain an understanding of the types of construction contracts in terms of time, cost, quality and supply chain management issues
This module aims to enable you to gain knowledge and understanding of different aspects and general principles of English contract law. The module gives you an overview of the requirements for the formation of contract, consideration, terms, interpretation and enforceability of contract, vitiating factors, damages and other remedies.
The learners will develop knowledge and understanding of the general principles and traditional approaches of English contract law and compare them with alternative models and techniques. They will also develop independent thinking and think practically in this field, and apply the legal rules and principles that they have learned to specific situations. The learners will develop the ability to identify and analyse the issues within the law of contract. Through analysis of contract cases leaners are able to gain an analytical and critical approach to contract law. Learners will be able to identify and providing fairness, inequality and remedies of bargaining power.
The aim of this module is to teach students the role and importance of operations management with emphasis is on the efficiency and effectiveness on managing the entire operations in the built environment. It also covers strategies used, such as capacity planning, facilities location planning, aggregate planning and scheduling, as well as inventory management techniques and quality management.
Operations management is the area of business activity concerned with the production of goods and services. It includes the responsibility of ensuring that all business/organisational operations are efficient in terms of minimising costs by using as few resources as possible, and effective in terms of maximising quality and meeting customer requirements. It is concerned with managing the transformational processes that convert inputs (in the form of materials, labour and energy) into outputs (in the form of goods and services). It is important therefore that learners seeking employment in the construction world realise that the ‘proper’ organisation of productive systems, and their interfaces with internal as well as external customers and suppliers, is essential if buildings are to be built on time, to cost and within the law.
Cost Planning and Budgeting
This module aims to give the learner understanding of Cost Planning and reporting principles, together with the skills to apply financial and management accounting principles in Built Environment.
This module provides an introduction to the context of both costing and budgeting and financial reporting. It looks at how the financial statements of a range of business entities differ, as well as the common elements between them. Learners will be able to explain the constituent elements and purpose and uses of Costing and Budgeting.
Learners will gain practical experience of producing budgets, flexing budgets based on actual output, and calculating variances between budgeted and actual results. Learners will be able to identify possible causes of variances and suggest corrective actions to be taken by management.
Professional Practice Project
To develop learners’ skills of independent enquiry and critical analysis by undertaking a continued research investigation of direct relevance to their Higher Education programme and professional development.
This module is designed to enable learners to gain confidence in using research techniques and methods. It addresses the elements that make up formal research including the proposal, a variety of research methodologies, action planning, carrying out the research and presenting the findings.
Learners must understand the theory that underpins formal research. The research itself will depend on learners, the context of their area of learning, their focus of interest and the anticipated outcomes. This module draws together a range of other information and knowledge of content from within the programme of study to form a holistic piece research work that will make a positive contribution to the learner’s area of interest. Learners will be able to develop skills such independent learning and drawing conclusion from their work.
Scope of Study
The course are broadly concerned with the control of the cost on construction projects, the management and maintenance of the budget, valuations and any legal matters arising through the course of the project. They are required to make sure that the project remains profitable and efficient.
The module will consist of lectures, case studies, group discussions and demonstrations in classrooms.

Relevant Working Experience:
Student with other diploma qualifications with minimum age of 23 years with at least 3 years working experience in relevant field. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) will be done to analysis whether student has met the required skills to beadmitted onto our Higher Diplomas.
Matured students, of 30 years old with at least 8 years of working experience will be considered on an individual basis.
