OTHM Level 4 Diploma in Business Management

Overview

The course is ideal for those who have started, or are planning to move into, a career in private or public sector business. Successful completion of the Level 4 Diploma in Business Management qualification will enable learners to progress to further study or employment.

All OTHM qualifications are approved and regulated by Ofqual. OTHM has progression arrangement with several UK universities that acknowledges the ability of learners after studying Level 3-7 qualifications to be considered for advanced entry into corresponding degree year/top up and Master’s/top-up programmes.

Objective

The objective of the OTHM Level 4 Diploma in Business Management qualification is to provide learners with an excellent foundation for building a career in a range of organisations. It designed to ensure each learner is ‘business ready’: a confident, independent thinker with a detailed knowledge of business and management and equipped with the skills to adapt rapidly to change.

The course comprises of the following 6 units:

Unit 1: Research and Academic Writing
Unit 2: Business Environment
Unit 3: Introduction to Business Communication
Unit 4: Introduction to Quantitative Methods
Unit 5: Introduction to Business Functions
Unit 6: Introduction to Finance

Unit 1: Research and Academic Writing

The aim of this unit is to enable learners to develop effective research plans, to evaluate different research methods, to use a high standard of academic writing, and to use independent learning techniques to support their self-development.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Understand the use of different sources of information and research formulation.
  2. Be able to conduct a basic literature review.
  3. Be able to evaluate research and data collection methods.
  4. Be able to produce academic work applying the Harvard Referencing system.
  5. Be able to use techniques for independent learning.

Unit 2: Business Environment

The aim of this unit to develop learners’ understanding of the dimensions of the business environment, including various business types and purpose.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Understand business organisations, their purpose and stakeholders.
  2. Understand the economic implications of operating businesses.
  3. Understand business market environments.
  4. Understand the effects of Global Markets and the need for organisations to operate globally.

Unit 3: Introduction to Business Communication

The aim of this unit is to enhance learners’ business communication skills and enable them to operate confidently in the business world.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Understand the principles which govern communication in business situations.
  2. Be able to compose common types of written communication.
  3. Understand the principles of oral and non-verbal communication
  4. Understand common barriers to communication and how they are overcome.
  5. Understand the role of technology in business communication.

Unit 4: Introduction to Quantitative Methods

The aim of this unit is to review the basic concepts in mathematics, algebraic equations, graph construction, matrix algebra and probability that need to be understood by all business learners. The emphasis rests on applying these concepts to a variety of mathematical problems encountered in business contexts.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Understand the rules of numeracy.
  2. Be able to make and apply calculations relevant to business.
  3. Be able to use algebraic methods to solve business problems.
  4. Be able to construct and use graphs, charts and diagrams in a business context.
  5. Be able to apply statistical methods to provide business and management information.
  6. Be able to apply the laws of probability to find solutions to business problems

Unit 5: Introduction to Business Functions

The aim of this unit is to develop learners’ understanding of businesses types and various external influences on organisations such as the comparative environmental framework.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Understand business objectives, accountability for them, and how they are resourced.
  2. Understand the structure and classification of businesses.
  3. Understand factors that influence the production process.
  4. Be able to articulate the elements of the marketing process including strategy, planning and research.
  5. Understand accounting concepts and sources of finance for business.
  6. Understand factors involved in workforce planning and the importance of motivation.

Unit 6: Introduction to Finance

The aim of this unit is to develop learners’ understanding of the current regulations governing financial reporting, as well as the purpose and formats of financial statements for different users.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Understand sources of finance available to a business.
  2. Understand finance as a resource within a business.
  3. Be able to make financial decisions based on financial information.
  4. Be able to assess the financial performance of a business.

Graduation Requirements

Pass all modules.

Teacher Qualifications

The Committee for Private Education (CPE) is duly notified of all the teachers in Coleman College. All teachers have the required qualifications. Please refer to “Our Teachers List” in the website for more details.

Maximum Teacher-Student Ratio is 1:40

Progression Pathway

Successful completion of Level 4 Diploma in Business Management provides learners the opportunity for a wide range of academic progressions including OTHM Level 5 Diploma in Business Management. As this qualification is approved and regulated by Ofqual (Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulation), learners are eligible to gain direct entry into Year 2 of a three-year UK Bachelor’s degree programmes.

Entry Requirements

Age: 17 years of age and above
Academic: 1 GCE A’ Level Pass at E and above; or Polytechnic Diploma or foreign qualification equivalent; or Equivalent
English Proficiency: GCE O’ Level Pass in English at C6 and above; or IELTS 5.5 and above; or Equivalent
