The Pearson BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Business (QCF) prepares learners for potential employment in the appropriate vocational sector.  This qualification is particularly more exciting for those who have signified their interest and inclination to enter into a particular area of work, while others may be eager to progress to higher education.BTEC Level 3 Diploma is an education pathway that offers learners the opportunity to develop themselves in a specialism that will pave their way for study progression to Pearson BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma and eventually to a degree. This qualification is also suitable for those who desire for career advancement.


Learners in Pearson BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Business (QCF) will be expected to develop the following skills during the programme of study:

  • ability to understand the existing spiritual, moral, ethical, social and cultural issues surrounding the business environment
  • in-depth awareness of the environmental, health and safety considerations and equal opportunities issues
  • effective management of time, planning, and initiative leading to personality development
  • understanding of the external and internal environment of business on a local, national and global perspective
  • discover leadership, presentation and team building skills
  • ability to perform and do classroom presentation (eg. project plan, marketing presentation) with good command of the language

Course Structure

Rule of Combination in the Pearson BTEC Level 3 Diploma

  1. Qualification credit value: a minimum of 120 credits
  2. Minimum credit to be achieved at or above, the level of the qualification: 90 credits
  3. Mandatory core unit credit: 40 credits
  4. Optional unit credit: 140 credits
  5. A maximum of 20 optional credits can come from other QCF level 3 BTEC units to meet local needs

Scope of Study

The core modules offered at Pearson BTEC Level 3 Diploma provide learners an introduction to and understanding of the business environment, business resources, marketing and communication with underpinning local, national, and global perspectives.

The elective units will cover topics related to research methodologies with marketing perspective, training in the world of business and the functions of retailing, supply chain and stock management. Introduction to business project management will be tackled with practical application.

Delivery Mode

The module will consist of lectures, case studies, role play, class exercises, games, tutorials and other appropriate learning methodologies to equip and to engage the students in a participative and dynamic mode of learning.

Course Duration

The course duration is 12 months of Institutional study – Full-time The maximum period allowable for the student to complete the course is 24 months.

Class Period

Full-time study:          3 hours a day, 5 days a week, 15 contact hours/week

Part-time study:          3 hours a day, 2 days a week, 6 contact hour/week

*Students (both International and Local) must achieve an attendance rate of 80% and above in order to qualify for examinations.

Assessment Methods

Pearson BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Business (QCF) is 100% assignment based. Assessment in this level is evidenced by the course work of the learners under the close supervision of the lecturer and/or tutor.  Assignments and assessments are developed based on the rigors of the learning outcomes and criteria set for each and every unit. Should a learner fail to meet the criteria for passing a unit or module at first attempt, a one-time chance will be given to resubmit an evidence of their assignment subject to the guidelines of resubmission. A redo of the whole module shall take place if a learner fails to meet the assessment criteria at second attempt.

Each successfully completed unit will be graded as a pass, merit or distinction.

  1. Learners who achieve the minimum eligible credit value specified by the rule of combination will achieve the qualification at Pass grade
  2. Learners will be awarded a Merit or Distinction (or combination of these grades appropriate to the qualification) by the aggregation of points gained through the successful achievement of individual units.

Progression Pathways

To Higher Education

Upon successful completion of the BTEC Level 3 in Diploma, learners can progress to BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma in Business delivered at Coleman College (20 months Full-time or Part-time)

To Employment Potentials

As a specialist vocational programme, Pearson BTEC in Business (QCF) will equip learners with practical skills, knowledge and competence necessary for their job placement and career progression.

Entry Requirements

Age: At least 16 years old
Academic: Minimum 3 GCE O-Level passes qualification or equivalent; or
Minimum 3 GCE N -Level passes qualification with at least 2 years of working experiences; or
Higher NITEC; or
Other related BTEC level 2 qualifications; or equivalentWithout the above entry requirement, student should be at least 30 years old with 8 years of working experience
English Proficiency: IELTS 5.5 or a pass in GCE ‘O’ level English or equivalent
