The Preparatory Course is designed to prepare international students to sit
for the Edexcel General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) Examination. The course is taught over 24 months. This course is to allow students to achieve the required number of passes and grades in the Edexcel General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) Examination which will enable the students to progress to further studies at local and overseas institutions offering tertiary level courses that recognise the qualification.

The Preparatory Course is designed to prepare international students to sit for the Edexcel General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) Examination.

Course Outline

The students may take any number of the following subjects offered:

• English Language

• Mathematics

• Accounting

• Business Studies

• Physics

• Economics

 

Subject Synopses

English:
Students study key features of the English Language – including Context and Identity – and also how other languages have influenced the development of English. They explore how language reflects and constructs the identity or identities of the user, the ways languages change and vary over time, with a focus on English in a global context. They also have opportunity for the development of research skills to a chosen topic area:

Unit 1: Language: Context and Identity

Unit 2: Language in Transition

Unit 3: Crafting Language (Writing)

Unit 4: Investigating Language

 

Mathematics:
Key features:

Unitised structure with all units equally weighted, equal available marks of 75 in each unit and each unit examination suitably timed at 1h 30m. 14 units available across Pure Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Mechanics, Statistics and Decision Maths allowing many different combinations of units and greater flexibility.

The International Advanced Level Mathematics is designed to:

• develop their understanding of mathematics and mathematical processes in a way that promotes confidence and fosters enjoyment.

• develop an awareness of the relevance of mathematics to other fields of study, to the world of work and to society in general.

• take increasing responsibility for their own learning and the evaluation of their own mathematical development.

 

Accounting:

Edexcel International Advanced Level in Accounting develops learners’ knowledge and understanding of the principles, concepts and techniques of accounting. The specification lays a secure foundation for the future study of accounting or related subjects.

 

Business Studies:

Provides a real business focus – students are encouraged to contextualise theory and respond to real- life international business case studies and stimulus material. Students develop an understanding of current global issues that impact on business, preparing them for their next steps in today’s global world.

Development of quantitative skills – students develop these skills throughout the content of the course and are required to apply these skills to relevant business contexts within the assessment.

The content is divided into 4 externally marked units:

Unit 1: Marketing and people

Unit 2: Managing business activities

Unit 3: Business decisions and strategy

Unit 4: Global business

 

Physics:
Practical skills assessed through a dedicated examination Unit both at AS (Unit 3) and at A Level Unit 6). There are 16 core practical activities that form a thread linking theoretical knowledge and understanding to practical scenarios in the specification. Range of types of questions in exams – testing a breadth of knowledge, as well as allowing depth of understanding to be tested.

The International Advanced Level Physics is designed to: develop their ability to apply mathematical skills to Physics throughout the course.gain experience in a variety of practical techniques and procedures, which will be assessed separately within Unit 3 and Unit 6.

• widen their learning through a number of key transferable skills, which may be cognitive, intrapersonal or interpersonal.

The content is divided into 6 externally marked units:

Unit 1: Mechanics and Materials

Unit 2: Waves and Electricity

Unit 3: Practical Skills in Physics I

Unit 4: Further Mechanics, Fields and Particles

Unit 5: Thermodynamics, Radiation, Oscillations and Cosmology

Unit 6: Practical Skills in Physics II


Economics:

Questions start with a low mark tariff and become more challenging as students work their way through the paper, helping to build confidence.

Content is divided into 4 externally marked units:

Unit 1: Markets in action

Unit 2: Macroeconomic performance and policy

Unit 3: Business behaviour

Unit 4: Developments in the global economy

Assessment Grading Criteria

Advanced levels (A levels) are made up of AS (Advanced Subsidiary) units and A2 units. AS (Advanced Subsidiary) qualifications are offered in the same subjects but contain half the content of an Edexcel International Advanced Level. A levels are fully linear, with students sitting their exams at the end of the two-year course. Learners can study AS as a stand-alone qualification.Advanced levels (A levels) are made up of AS (Advanced Subsidiary) units and A2 units. AS (Advanced Subsidiary) qualifications are offered in the same subjects but contain half the content of an Edexcel International Advanced Level. A levels are fully linear, with students sitting their exams at the end of the two-year course. Learners can study AS as a stand-alone qualification.

Edexcel International A levels are modular qualifications made up of four or six separate units. A UMS (Uniform Mark Scale) grade is issued for each unit and once the course is completed, an overall International AS or International A level grade will be given:

• International AS units are graded A to E.

• International A2 units are graded A to E, published as the theoretical A* boundary.

• International A Level cash-ins are graded A* to E.

If you don’t get enough marks to pass with an E you’ll be awarded a U (unclassified).

Expected Examination Results Release Date

Examination results will be announced by Pearson Edexcel.

Progression Pathway

The Pearson Edexcel IAL programme is recognized internationally by schools and universities (both local and international) for further education and employment opportunities.

Age: At least 17 years old
Academic: At least (3) three GCE ‘O’ level passes, level 2 in a BTEC or GCSEs or equivalent
English Proficiency: IELTS 5.5 or a pass in GCE ‘O’ level English or equivalent
