Preparatory Course for Edexcel International Primary Curriculum Achievement Test Year 6

The Preparatory Course is designed to prepare international students to sit for the Pearson Edexcel International Primary Curriculum Achievement Test Year 6. It provides an international benchmark of achievement, with externally marked Achievement Tests and certification at the end of Year 6.

The Achievement Test is conducted by the Edexcel and involves a centralized test on English, Mathematics and Science. The test is held in June of each year. International students will obtain the International Award and proceed to Coleman College International Lower Secondary Curriculum.

Under the discipline of English, students will explore into current affairs, modern day problems, focusing on debate, historical, social, political, philosophical and economic factors of certain societies, art and music.

While learning the fundamentals of Mathematics, students will be given the opportunity of excelling in problem-solving and logic development. The inquiry of Science will also allow students to explore both the physical aspect and the knowledge of healthy living.

Since it is important for them to learn how to think, and not just what to think, students also learn analytical and critical thinking through the incisive pedagogy.

As it caters to the learning needs of all International Students, students will go through the curriculum under the rigor of the teaching format of Singapore Education System, which is viewed as the premium pedagogy worldwide.

Admission Exercise for International Students (AEIS) Test

Applicants can also opt to sit for the Admission Exercise for International Students (AEIS) Test to gain admission into Government Primary or Secondary Schools. The AEIS Test is conducted by the Ministry of Education (MOE), Singapore.

The AEIS Test involves a centralized test on English and Mathematics and is held in September/ October of each year. International students who are successful in the AEIS Test will be assigned by Ministry of Education to join a Singapore Government School in January of the following year.

Applicants who have taken part in AEIS Test previously and were unsuccessful may apply to take AEIS Test again at the same or higher level, subject to MOE Terms and Conditions.

Course Outline

The course consists of 3 (three) subjects taught accordingly:

  • English
  • Mathematics

English
Synopsis

The Year 6 English class is aimed at enabling students to acquire foundational skills, particularly in grammar, spelling and basic pronunciation. The focus is on the four main language skills, namely, reading, listening, writing and speaking. The students will attain a good level of competency. Year 6 students should be able to read newspapers and magazines, read historical fiction – compare past and present trends, collect and compose words and phrases typical of journalistic writing, read and interpret a wide range of poems, understand and use vocabulary related to drama conventions, and pass reading comprehension assessments. The students will attain a good level of competency. As such, this class will prepare the students for the Final Year exam. Upon successful completion of the Year 6 English exam, students will be promoted to Lower Secondary English.

Mathematics
Synopsis

The Year 6 Mathematics class is aimed at enabling students to acquire Mathematical concepts and skills for everyday use and continuous learning in Mathematics. It also aims at developing thinking, reasoning, communication and application through a mathematical approach to problem solving. More importantly, it aims to build confidence and foster interest in Mathematics itself. Year 6 students should be competent in numbers and algebra, recall multiplication tables, solve word problems, functions and graphs, read measurements from different scales, solve geometric problems, collect data and draw conclusions, and use a calculator effectively. As such, this class will prepare the students for the Final Year exam. Upon successful completion of the Year 6 Mathematics exam, students will be promoted to Lower Secondary Mathematics.

Science
Synopsis

The Year 6 Science class is aimed at enabling students to acquire Science concepts and skills for everyday use and continuous learning in Science. It also aims at developing an inquisitive mind through critical thinking. It requires students to demonstrate knowledge, understanding and application of the different learning objectives of the various topics. They include interaction within an environment, adaptation, micro-organisms, reversible and irreversible changes, forces, perspective, electric circuits and scientific enquiry. As such, this class will prepare the students for the Final Year exam. Upon successful completion of Year 6 Science exam, students will be promoted to Lower Secondary Science.

Assessment Grading Criteria

The Pearson Edexcel International Primary Award in will be graded as pass or fail and is awarded at three attainment levels: P1, P2, P3.
